Is the TOEFL test changing?

Yes! The TOEFL test is being restructured to include an interactive speaking section. The test will also become internet-based (iBT), and will gradually phase out the previous paper-based (PBT) and computer-based testing (CBT) format.

Will reading, writing, structure and listening continue to be included in the new TOEFL test?

The next generation TOEFL test will include four sections; reading, writing, listening and speaking sections. The speaking section will allow academic institutions using TOEFL scores, for admission purposes, to asses applicants based on all aspects of English proficiency.

When will the new TOEFL test be available?

The new TOEFL test will be launched in phases throughout the globe. The following is a timetable indicating the approximate termination date of the old TOEFL format and the implementation of the new format in each region.

UNITED STATES

Termination of PBT and CBT: Mid-September, 2005

Implementation of iBT: September 24, 2005

CANADA, FRANCE, GERMANY, AND ITALY

Termination of PBT: October 15 2005

Termination of CBT: mid-October, 2005

Implementation of iBT: October 22, 2005

All other countries

By November 1, 2005, the schedule for the new TOEFL test in all other countries will be released. Make sure to check back on this site for updated timetables.

Will my old TOEFL score still be valid?

If you have already taken a TOEFL test and received a score, your standing will be valid based on the standards of the institution you are applying to. Please check with the academic institution for details.

How will the new speakingsection be graded?

The entire test will be delivered via the Internet, and the speaking section will be marked using new Internet-based technology.

Is it absolutely necessary for me to change the way I study for the TOEFL test?

Whether it be for immigration, university entrance or career related, it is very important that students studying to take the next generation TOEFL test adapt to the new format. It is important to update all material you use to study for the test, and to make sure your teachers are up to date on the new format.

Is International House Toronto ready for the next generation TOEFL test?

Yes! All IH Toronto TOEFL preparation instructors have been trained how to prepare students for the new TOEFL test. All our TOEFL teachers have been taking part in iBT TOEFL seminars, and our director of studies has been hard at work revamping our TOEFL curriculum to include preparation on all new sections of the test.

Will the new TOEFL test still be 4 hours long?

While a definite length has yet to be published, the new test is expected to be approximately 4 hours long.

What is the format of the new TOEFL Test?

The new iBT TOEFL test is divided into four sections: listening, reading, writing, and speaking.

  1. Reading
    • 3 academic reading passages followed by comprehension questions that measure the ability to understand and analyze the meaning of the passages
    • Familiar question types from the computer-based TOEFL test
    • New question types in which test takers demonstrate they have learned what they have read, either by filling out a table or completing a narrative summary choose a correct paraphrase of a reading
    • New features that make the testing experience easier for test takers, including a glossary and review feature
  2. Listening
    • 2 conversations that include 2 or more speakers in each
    • 4 lectures, which include classroom dialogue
    • Opportunity to take notes while listening
    • Familiar question types from the computer-based TOEFL test
    • New question types that measure test takers' ability to understand a speaker's attitude or meaning
  3. Writing
    • 1) Reading/Listening/Writing task Academic reading and lecture
    • 1) Independent task about a familiar topic
  4. Speaking
    • 2 independent tasks about familiar topics
    • 2 tasks based on Reading and Listening material
    • 2 tasks based on Listening material, including a short lecture or conversation
